IP TV, or television broadcasting over internet protocol, is basically the process of transmitting television content via internet protocol. In simple terms, IP TV is the translation of television channels, both encrypted and unencrypted, into IP packets using internet technologies and delivered directly to end users. In this way, TV shows, movies and other broadcasts are delivered to you over your internet connection, unlike satellite broadcasting.
The first use of IP TV was with the World News Now program of the American ABC channel. This technology, which became widespread in both the US and Europe in the early 2000s, also attracted interest in Turkey. Türk Telekom started working on IP TV in 2008 and after a two-year development process, offered this service to consumers under the Tivibu brand.
Traditionally, television programs are converted into radio frequencies and transmitted through the air to antennas in our homes. These antennas convert the waves they receive into electrical signals and our television sets receive these signals and present them to us in the form of sound and images. The way IP TV works is different from this traditional method and is based on a very simple principle.
The signals sent by television broadcasters undergo a series of processes to be converted into digital format. This digital content is routed through distribution networks to IP TV systems for transmission over the internet. In order for these digital broadcasts to reach your TV, you need an IP TV compatible satellite receiver, a TV with Smart TV capability or an IP TV box.
